Langtang Valley Trek
The Langtang Valley Trek, sometimes called “the valley of the glaciers” is in close proximity to Kathmandu which makes it a an easily accessible hiking destination. As the nickname implies, there are many glaciers at a low altitude which can easily be explored. The name Langtang comes from an ancient legend wherein a Tibetan Lama was searching for his yak (in Tibetan lang) and following (in Tibetan tang) it found this amazing valley.
This trek takes one close to Tibet, as the valley lies just south of that border. You will be able to learn much about the traditions and culture of the Tamang people who live in the region and how they share many of the same customs as the Tibetans. Trekking through a sub-tropical jungle, then a dense forest of oak, birch and pine, the valley opens out onto alpine meadows and yak pastures. The highlight in spring is beholding the splendor of these high meadows carpeted with a rich variety of alpine wildflowers and the forests in full bloom with rare tree orchids, wild primulas and colourful rhododendron.
The Langtang Valley Trek is an ideal choice for both nature lovers and adventurers. It is an easy to moderate trek which fits all age groups and fitness levels. It is also a popular hike for families. Accommodations along the way are in modest but clean tea houses which also have restaurants serving a choice of menus. The best time for Langtang Valley is March – April and September – November, but Mountain World Treks & Expeditions can arrange this trek at your request and time frame, with your holiday schedule in mind. Autumn (Sept to Nov) and Spring (March to May) are the best seasons for the Langtang Valley Trek. The weather is sunny and warm with outstanding views. If you wish to avoid crowds and enjoy some alone time with nature then taking this trip during winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) could also be an another great option.
However, the temperature during winter could be harsh for most guests. Trekking in the Summer or Monsoon seasons (June to Aug) will be affected by rain but the Summer trek could be a boon for a keen botanist.
You are advised to consider the following equipment as essentials while packing. Please use this link as a guideline.
